Afternoon.

You seem like we can get along well. I'll do the talking, you just have to listen. No worries.

If you're anything like me, you'd know we don't really settle. Can't, not gonna! But... I'd like the idea of a pet. How does that work out? Well, let me tell you. First of all, you're gonna have to be smart about it. And, before we get into this, I need you to understand that an animal is not a toy. It lives, it feels. And you're not gonna screw up this animal because of a bad decision. You're smart, right?

First idea! Get a pet that doesn't require a lot of work, like a cat. Or... A snake. Or a goat! Okay, well, maybe not a goat. But, you get the gist. Should you settle on a dog, think about the dog. If you're in a neighborhood, a Border Collie ain't gonna work for you. You're not gonna settle into an exercise routine with that dog. Rather look for an independent and smart dog, like a ChowChow. Do some research! Don't just "get a pet".

You can train every creature to do almost anything! And they fit in with you. Most of them are loving, understanding and naturally sensitive to the needs and wants of their human family. They grow attached to you, just like you love them.

Next idea. Get a family pet. Who else wants a bunny? Your wife? Awesome! She'll take over if your schedule gets too busy. Socialize your animal with EVERYONE in your family. If pressing matters urge your time elsewhere, at least the animal will go to someone they know and feel comfortable with. But, again, a pet is a part of your family. So don't toy with them.

But do buy them lots and lots of toys! Animals love toys! And, bonus points, it'll help that your furniture don't get chewed on or clawed or pecked or... well, whatever animal will destroy your house. Or garden! Even the outside guys need toys! Don't think just cause a dog is older that it doesn't need a toy. Not just puppies love toys.

Oh, I got another one. Get an animal that doesn't have a long lifespan. Like a Finch. (It's a bird, by the way.) Or a Killifish. (If the name didn't give it away, it's a fish.) Or, get a grey parrot. (I hope you know what a parrot is.) Those things can hold a conversation! (It's a bird.) You'll have a permanent friend. But, on the other hand, they grow very attached to their humans. So be very, very, very careful in this decision. They also grow quite old.

Basically, just remember to take the responsibility seriously and you won't have many problems. 'Cause a pet loves you for you. They're not like people. We love people. But we love animals too. And they are much more dependent on us than adults. Or, friends. Oh, I hope you do get a pet! I have this awesome little buddy at home and he completes me. I sometimes give him bits of biltong. It's really amazing. They're awesome companions, and great lovers.
